At its regular meeting on September 16, the Vestry:
—approved the schedule of clergy who will preside and preach on all Sundays from October 27 until the end of February, plus Christmas Eve;
–approved an arrangement with The Rev. Beth Hilgartner (Rector of St. Barnabas’ Church in Norwich) to be “on call” for pastoral emergencies, including funerals. She can be contacted at 603-353-9303 or at firstname.lastname@example.org;
–approved an arrangement with The Rev. Diane Root (retired priest who lives in Lebanon), who will be working with parish families with young children; she will preside at an informal communion service at least once a month;
–approved contracting with Christine Clark, a resident of Thetford and member of the North Thetford United Church, to do basic secretarial services (Sunday leaflet, newsletter, mail, etc.). She is also the part-time Administrative Assistant at the Lyme Congregational Church;
–discussed the recent conversations that have been held with representatives of St. Barnabas’ Church in Norwich and drafted a reply to the letter from St. Barnabas’ Vestry (no action is being proposed at this point but the Vestry will continue to reflect and pray about this situation);
–made plans to meet with Bishop Ely and The Rev. Thad Bennett on Tuesday, October 1. The meeting will include a light supper and will focus on the transition process in which the Diocese will be assisting the Vestry and parish plan for the future;
–discussed some issues regarding the Building and Grounds;
In response to a proposal from the Spiritual Planning Committee, about 35 parishioners of all ages made a pilgrimage on September 22 to the Fairlee Food Shelf (located at the Community Church of Christ) after the Eucharist. The pilgrims delivered a large quantity of donated food items and were welcomed by the pastor and members of the Community Church.
TODD MCKEE’S ORDINATION
Todd McKee, who was an intern at St. Martin’s a year ago, was ordained to the priesthood on Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. at St. Barnabas’ Church in Norwich. On October 6, he preached and presided for the first time as Priest in Partnership at Gethsemane Church in Proctorsville, Vermont.
We have such mixed feelings as we prepare to leave St. Martin’s Church. On the one hand, we are very sad about no longer being part of this beloved faith community. We will miss worshipping with you and we feel a real loss about not being fellow pilgrims with you on St. Martin’s spiritual journey. We are so grateful for all you have given us, including the very generous gift presented to us at the wonderful gathering at the Davis home on September 28. We have many, many rich memories to cherish from our time with you. However, even as we express our sadness about this change in our lives, we are excited about the future. We look forward to a variety of experiences of traveling and spending time with our family and we are going to be engaged in some new activities and volunteer opportunities about which we are enthusiastic. It will not be easy leaving St. Martin’s, but we hope you understand that we depart with a great love for all of you and we pray that God will be present in all our lives in the future as we continue our journeys as followers of Jesus.
THE UNITED CHURCH OF ZIMBABWE
On the Parish Life Bulletin Board is a thank you note to St. Martin’s parishioners who donated many items for shipment to churches in Zimbabwe. This project was organized by the West Newbury Congregational Church.
THE MENTORING PROJECT
The Mentoring Project of the Upper Valley is seeking volunteers to mentor children and adolescents in our community. A brochure about the project is on the table in the hallway. Joe Donarum can provide additional information about this very valuable program.
FAIRLEE TOWN HALL
Posted on the Parish Life Bulletin Board is a letter and summary of a proposal from the Friends of Fairlee Town Hall regarding their effort to reopen the second floor of the town hall and it make it handicapped accessible.
