News came yesterday that noted Episcopal biblical scholar Marcus Borg died on Tuesday, January 21. The obituaries all note that he was a “liberal” scholar, but most of all he was a generous one. His books (Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time is probably his most famous) are a point of entry for many people into serious study of the New Testament that always aimed to be faithful, christian, even mystical. He and the much more conservative scholar N.T. Wright became friends and wrote a book together modeling how to disagree about important things without descending into hostility and name calling.
Here:is an obituary from the Oregonian, the newspaper where Borg lived.
And here is a Roman Catholic appreciation from the Boston Globe’s Crux news service.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory!
